Warm and Stylish: How to Layer Your Outfits

Warm and Stylish: How to Layer Your Outfits

3 min reading time

With the fall season and a drop in temperature almost upon us, our jackets and coats will start to become the most-used pieces in our closet. The change from summer weather to a crisp fall setting is a great time to experiment with different colours, textures and layering.

Adding layers to your ensemble not only ensures that you can remove garments depending on how cold or warm it is, but it also enables you to make use of multiple fashion pieces at once and create unique and stylish-looking outfits.

Many people can effortlessly put together a layered outfit and look runway-ready, but some of us need a little more guidance when it comes to styling. Below, we’ve listed some tips on how to layer your outfits this fall.

Cardigans Under a Jacket and Coat

A three-layered outfit may make you feel sweaty at the thought, but wearing a long-knitted cardigan underneath a jacket and coat allows you to play with different colours and textures. Cardigans look simple and cozy, but a leather or dark denim jacket worn overtop can give your ensemble an edgier look.

Depending on whether it’s especially chilly outside, throwing an oversized coat on top of your jacket will give your outfit additional depth. Simply draping the coat over your shoulders will show off the layering underneath, while choosing a lighter coloured coat will offset the dark tones of your leather jacket underneath.

Sweater, Hoodie and a Leather Jacket

This ensemble is similar to one above — but the important difference here is the use of a zip-up hooded sweatshirt. Wearing these three pieces will keep you warm without making your top half look too bulky.

A simple hoodie worn over a plain sweatshirt can give your appearance an effortless feel. Putting a leather jacket on top adds warmth and dresses up your sweater combo slightly. The added bonus of wearing a hoodie under your leather jacket is that you can pull the hood up if it’s extra cold, without adding on any extra layers.

Thick, Long Scarves and Beanie Hats

Fall wouldn’t be the same without the use of long wrap-around scarves and cute beanie hats. These two components can be fantastic finishing touches on layered outfits and work well when worn together.

When it comes to scarves, the thicker and more eye-catching the better. A brightly coloured scarf that wraps around your top half will draw attention to your look, while a beanie can frame your face and is a great accessory to put on if you want to hide a bad hair day!

Colour is Everything

Layering is a great opportunity for you to play around with colour. Although all-black is great for fall and can look super Parisian and chic, it’s good to inject autumnal colours like reds, greens and oranges into your outfits to break up the layers and allow each piece of clothing to shine!
